What have the Digit Team been listening to? - August/September Edition

As a team of creatives here at Digit, we are always actively making music. However, we also like to listen to a lot of music in our free time to wind down, or to look for inspiration. Every month, we will be highlighting some of the music the Digit team have been listening to and hey, maybe you’ll find some new music from these posts!

Below, the team tells us what they’ve been listening to and what music they’ve been inspired by this month.

I’ve got back into listening to the radio this month, specifically 6Music. It’s been ages since I have given the radio any time as I usually listen to books on audible or podcasts. Hiatus Kaiyote’s ‘new’ (not really that new now) album, Mood Valiant, is amazing. The mixes are ridiculous! I heard Lewole the other morning and it was just what I needed, the vocals sound really nice over the dubby, laid back, hip hop influenced beat. If I still DJ’d regularly, this would 100% be in my set.

This month I've been getting into a bit of post punk, especially the new Squid album ‘Bright Green Field’. I think my favourite track on the album at the moment is ‘Boy Racers’ but ‘G.S.K’ is a close second. On top of the new squid album I’ve been re-listening through the Parquet Courts discography in anticipation for a new album.

This month I have been exploring how songs make me feel so often as an artist I find because we hear music differently often. I find myself forgetting to just feel and enjoy it too. These songs are songs that have shown me how to feel music again.

To find inspiration I’ve been listening to a wide range of genres to apply to my own music creations. I’ve been listening to alot of Drill, mainly tracks that have been produced by Ghosty as he’s by far my favourite Drill producer currently. His 808’s sounds and patterns are nuts! but in a good way.  When I’m relaxing or cleaning the house I like to listen to some Lofi Hip Hop by producers like Nujabes and Ocha. Whenever I get in the car I always listen to Smooth fm as I usually find myself making 70’s Soul samples each month. I generally find some gems on Smooth that really get me inspired to rush back to the lab.

D&B wise I really like the Chase and Status album right now, Return to Jungle. It's Fire!

Owain

Musically I've been back peddling this month and rediscovering some records I haven't spent time with for a while. Boards of Canada Music Has the Right To Children, still gives me hazy goosebumps every time I hear it. Miles Davis Kind of Blue, I lose myself in that album and lots of Jimi Hendrix Experience as I’m learning the bass lines to some of their songs.

Woods

This month, I've found myself predominantly listening to two artists, with the first one being Los Angeles based artist “YEAT”. His music shows signs of influence from artists such as Playboi Carti and Future, blended with a fresh and new underground sound. The other artist I've been listening to, who is not so “underground” is Kanye West. He recently dropped his new album “DONDA” and I've had it on repeat since! It brings a fresh style of production to the table, blending sounds from his “Jesus is King” project with newer sounds similar to those from his project “Yeezus”.
